About:
|
NC Benfica was created in 1993 in a High School by a teacher (Nuno Ferro). In
the same season, the team reached 1st place in the School Sports Organisation
(under 18) and had its first international experience, by playing against 2
Dutch teams that were in Portugal participating in an International Tournament.
The club grew, both in number of players and in quality, reaching 4th place in
the National Senior Championship and becoming a finalist in the Portuguese Cup
in 1996/97.
In 1997/98 (now with 3 teams), the first team finished 3rd, the 3rd team reached
1st place in 2nd division and the Under 19 were also Champions in their league.
It was in 1999/00 that NC Benfica reached the top, becoming Portuguese champions
and wining the Portuguese Cup; this achievement was repeated in 2001/02, when
the club had already 4 teams and over 50 players.
However, the greatest achievement of NC Benfica was in 2003/04, when, besides
winning the National Championship, the Portuguese Cup and the SuperCup, they
also finished 3rd in the Europa Cup, which was the best performance ever in this
competition by a Portuguese team.
