About this competition: - is the premier international event for the clubs as opposed to the National teams in Europe. - is held yearly; preliminary rounds take place in October, final round in January. Europa Cup 2006 Final Round will be held in Prievidza (Slovakia) from 12-14 January 2006 The annual tournament for European national champions clubs was won by the Dutch champions PKC/Café Bar from Papendrecht, who won the tournament for a record sixth time. Dutch teams have dominated the event in recent years and the last time that another country won the event was in 1998 when PKC, who were again the Dutch champions that year, chose not to participate for religious reasons as some games were on a Sunday. The last time a Belgian team beat the Dutch in a final was 1997, so it was with great expectation that Riviera, competing in the event for the first time ever, took on PKC. The winning team, with many Dutch internationals, was stronger than last year thanks to the transfer of Wim Scholtmeijer, the star last year's winners Fortuna/Tempus from Delft. The Russian champion Orel OSTU was very close to winning through to the final. In the decisive match of Pool A they played a very tight game against Belgian favourites KC Riviera and in the last two minutes they had two chances to equalise. It was not their destiny this year, as Mitch Lenaerts scored the protective goal just three seconds before the final whistle to clinch a 15-13 victory. However, in an easy 21-12 win over Germany's KV Adler-Rauxel in the 3/4 place match they confirmed that the continual rise of Russian korfball is evident and the strongest teams in the korfball world must accept this challenge. |
